This was indeed the book about Stoicism that needed to be written. Stoicism has had a resurgence over the last few years, but as Mr Farnsworth says in the introduction, he prefers to read "the originals" (the Late Roman Stoics--Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius and Seneca--whose writings provide the vast majority of surviving witness to ancient Stoicism), for good reason. In organizing passages of the ancient Stoic authors and their philosophical descendants (e.g., Montaigne and Schopenhauer), he has done us all a service. The Stoics did not write in a systematic way, but now we can read them systematically.Mr Farnsworth has conceived of this book as a syllabus on Stoicism, starting with the foundational concept of "Judgment" (what is up to us and what is not), and progressing through Externals, Desire, Death and other major concepts. The beginner can proceed through the syllabus and gain a thorough, systematic understanding of the ethics of Stoicism (not to mention a life-changing way of thinking!). The seasoned, knowledgeable modern-day Stoic has a reference in which one can remind oneself of what "the originals" thought about a particular topic.A useful, well-written, highly readable book. I've read almost all the modern books written about Stoicism, and I am not exaggerating when I say this is the best one I have read. I am deeply grateful for Mr Farnsworth's contribution to the literature.

Turning back to the Stoics after 30 years away, I was shocked to find a plethora of pop psychology Stoic guides out there; this isn't one of them. Farnsworth knows his subject better than anyone else, and he covers it with greater clarity and thoroughness than one would imagine, all in non-technical everyday language. If you have the slightest interest in learning the final, practical essence of Stoic thought, get this book and read it-- with a highlighter. I would almost trade the gorgeous Martin Hammond (Penguin) translation of Marcus for it. It's a "desert island" book.

After reading the description of this book, I expected that it would merely make a good reference book on Stoicism. I did not expect that I would find myself unable to put it down, but that is exactly what happened. Farnsworth expertly weaves insightful commentary with the words of the great Stoics themselves. The combination leads to a unique and valuable addition to modern Stoic literature.I highly recommend this book to anyone new to Stoicism or wanting to delve deeper into its teaching and practices.

Good humored account of the thinking of the Stoics on various topics including the mutability of life, mortality, the opinions of others, and other subjects. After a short introduction, the book is organized around topics with quotations from classic Roman stoical philosophers as well as their progeny -- Montaigne, Dr. Johnson, Adam Smith and some others. The author organizes the quotations in a logical sequence and glues them together with his own thoughts always presented with a light and humorous touch. The book is not really philosophy in the sense of densely reasoned arguments from first principles but rather thought provoking observations on the nature of life and how to more happily accommodate and accept reality.

There are a lot of good works for the modern practicing Stoic, but in my opinion this is perhaps the best.In a sense, Farnsworth has created a modern Enchiridion, but drawing from many sources - both ancient and modern - and sorting things thematically for easy access.Though he lets the original sources do the speaking for themselves, he does provide a bit of text to highlight points or provide needed logical linkage, but he does so very well and unobtrusively. I find his thoughts to be as valuable as all the others in the book.If I had one book of Stoic wisdom to take with me to a desert island, it would be this one!

Having a bit of a tiff in the household (that happens with teens in the house). Pop this book open to the section on anger, and have some words of wisdom from Marcus Aurelius available in seconds. Saved the day. :) Thanks Ward.

There are many books published on the topic of Stoicism, but Farnsworth has structured his book with an informative design throughout so that the reader can engage in the collection of quotes and relevant statements related to a topical theme. Yes, there are the core statements by Stoic philosophers, but Farnsworth has also weaved in related materials from other scholars and thinkers related to (and relevant with) Stoic philosophy. I liked the focus (e.g., "practicing") and the practical application to the human condition in contemporary times. This is a great book to add to your shelf (or digital reader) on philosophy...that can be "used" - not just theorized or conceptualized. But of course, that is the one of the strengths of the Stoic tradition over the long stretch of time: it is a philosophical 'doing' for the human 'being.'

If you have read the stoics before you won't find much new except for the organization into chapters of the philosophy which the author has divided the book along with his own comments. Stoicism now seems to attract a lot of people these days most of whom don't know where to start. I would recommend this book and then go to the original authors dating back primarily to Greek and Roman times. All the references are here as well.
